The successful formula usually ends with using leverage to ensure a win-win compromise or arranging for the villain of the week to be neutralized (captured, killed, or just forced to run away). The latter usually includes old enemies or worse, his old friends, trying to kill or recruit him. The episode-specific story usually follows one of three outlines: A) Helping someone currently being threatened B) recovering damages for someone who was ripped off or C) Westen’s old life catching up to him. Rather than choosing between Monster-of-the-Week and Overarching-Story storylines, each episode contains a main plot specific to the episode, as well as a minor plot that advances the overall story. The opening credit narration of each episode helpfully summarizes things: Michael Westen (Jeffrey Donovan) used to be a spy until he was set up and disavowed by the CIA. Burn Notice (2007-2013) is a spy action series set in sunny Miami and decked with Cuban music.
